Master the Power of Mac OS X at the First O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference

Sebastopol, CA-O'Reilly & Associates is now accepting tutorial and session proposals for the first-ever O'Reilly Mac OS X Conference, taking place at the Westin Santa Clara in Santa Clara, CA from September 30 to October 3, 2002.

While it greatly reduces a host of barriers to Mac use from its previous incarnations, Apple's recent release of Mac OS X nonetheless requires all users, developers, and technical staff--Apple faithful, *nix converts, and Java programmers alike--to embark on a learning experience into unfamiliar territory. Says O'Reilly & Associates founder and president Tim O'Reilly, 'I find it fascinating to see the Mac moving to a Unix foundation, and wonder what that marriage will enable.I like to think that these two great operating systems have a lot to teach each other. Both systems have had very clearly defined architectures that have enabled a level playing field for developers.'

Call for Participation

This conference is designed to bring together diverse members of the Mac community for four days of exploration and unabashed celebration of all things Mac OS X. We're seeking presentations that address how a variety of technologies fit into the Max OS X landscape, and that illustrate how to leverage the grace and power of this completely rebuilt operating system into greater productivity. Following one day of tutorials aimed at bringing users and developers from many backgrounds up to speed in Mac OS X are three days of multi-tracked conference sessions focusing on:

  • Migration from Mac OS 9, Windows, and *nix
  • Mac OS X must-have tools, optimizations, mods, hacks, and tweaks
  • Servers and Networking: NetInfo, Samba, RAID, WebDAV, NFS
  • Wireless networks
  • Project Builder, Interface Builder, and Java-based IDEs
  • DAMP (Darwin/Apache/MySQL/PHP, Perl, Python)
  • The Terminal application, command-line, and shell
  • Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, MacGimp
  • Languages: C, Objective-C, Java, AppleScript, Perl, Python, Ruby
  • Development Frameworks: Carbon, Cocoa, Java
  • Plug-ins, hacks, and scripts for the iPod, iPhoto, iMovie, and iTools.

All presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration at the conference. Deadline for submission of proposals is June 14, 2002. Deck the balls mac os. Speakers will be notified by June 20, 2002. Conference registration opens in June 2002.
