The Town Of Beacon Mac OS

The only utility to turn a Mac into an iBeacon that worked for me under El Capitan (OS X 10.11) was iBeaconSwiftOSX. Also reported to work under Yosemite (OS X 10.10). The (free) iOS scanning utility used was iBeacon Loc from Eurelis. FYI: on iOS, a scanner MUST search for a SPECIFIC combination of UUID and major/minor advertised by an iBeacon.

After evaluating much cheaper alternatives, I purchased the $40 Software MacKiev version of 'Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing'. This product is not to be confused with the similar sounding 'Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing' product sold by Encore. (There's an interesting back story to this -- note the MacKiev Mavis Beacon manual still says 'Broderbund' on the front.)

For guest and shift workers, you can even set a Mac to work off a remote boot from an OS X Server or use the local multiple-accounts capability built into OS X that separates user data from each. Mavis beacon is a popular typing software that most commonly use for educational purpose. There is no free download for the latest version but its older versions are given for free. Most schools, popular or less known, in rural or in urban areas are using this typing software to let their students know the proper ways of typing. Mail Beacon and POPmonitor: Spam Sentinels for Mac OS 8, 9, and X Charles Moore - 2004.04.12 - Tip Jar While Intego's announcement of 'the first OS X Trojan horse' last week was more than a bit alarmist, spam remains a plague to Mac users as well as PC users.

As best I can tell the Encore Mavis Beacon OS X software is a derelict and abandoned product that's sold cheaply but worth nothing. Sadly, that's the only version Amazon ships directly. I think they're confused.
Apple sells the MacKiev version. This is a new version of an old product, as noted in the manual ..

History Of Mac Os

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing was created more than twenty years ago, and was first published in 1987. Software MacKiev’s involvement goes back to 1998 when our company developed version 9 for the Macintosh — both the US and UK editions. Then, a decade later, we had the opportunity to get involved with Mavis Beacon again — this time as the developer and publisher of a new generation of Mavis Beacon software for Mac OS X. We are so pleased and proud to be bringing the kind of quality you’ve come to expect from the creative labs of Software MacKiev to this new edition.
They really should change the name of the product. By the way, Mavis Beacon is an invented person, but her image is from a 1985 picture of Renee Le'Esperance.

It took me quite a while to sort out the Encore vs. MacKiev story, but now you know.
Once I had the package in hand, but before I bothered to use it, I could score this product using Gordon's Laws of software acquisition:
  1. Excellent web site and a current updater: +1
  2. Proprietary installer: 0
  3. Needs uninstaller, none provided, no uninstall directions: -1
  4. No DRM: +2
  5. Can use without CD installed: +1
  6. No trial version: 0
  7. Support site quality: +1
  8. No developer blog: 0
  9. Obvious pride in work: +2
  10. Beautiful full color paper manual (as well as well formatted PDF): +2
Overall score: 8 out of a max of 13. A passing score, but they'd do much better if they'd document an uninstall procedure. The paper manual, which feels like a relic of another era, pushed them into a respectable range.
The install is a 600MB package in the normal Applications folder. As best I can tell it doesn't install anything else. I suspect the uninstall is a simple package to trash delete. If they'd only documented that they'd have gotten 11/13!
I installed from my admin account, removed the CD, and launched from the kids user account. I downloaded and applies the latest patch. That patch was labeled as a '10.6 upgrade' but it includes some functional changes. It installed well in 10.5 and 10.6 in my testing. You don't need the CD to run the software, everything is installed to disk (you do need disk space, but that's not an issue for most users any more).
The only minor glitch was that I installed in an account that didn't have iTunes setup and it complained. It asked me to install iTunes first. It comes with its own music set, so iTunes isn't even needed.
We've just begun using the product, but, really, I'm impressed. It's elegant, fast on my older G5 as well as the iMac, and it's a rich product. Two of our three kids went at it immediately, the girl doing lessons and the boy doing games. It's designed for multiple users. In the 'Learning account' each user gets their own login. User profiles can be exported and imported.

I'll update my review as we learn more, but it looks like a winner.
PS. Amazon version of this review.
PPS. Amazon's top rated Mavis Beacon is 1994's version 8 for Windows 3.1 by 'Mindscape'- it's still for sale. I wonder if there's any other 16 year old software sold on Amazon? Thanks to that version we can see how Mavis Beacon has changed over time. I wonder which is closest to the original model?

I heard a crashing sound coming from the North.

I had heard rumours about the Northern town, Beacon.

Town

I went to Investigate.

The Town of Beacon is a short experience centered around a small town with big secrets. Within the experience, there are many hidden messages that help to piece together the narrative, so look closely and listen carefully. This project was originally created for a school assignment and assembled in 10 weeks.

A reallz great game (maybe a little short).

We enjoyed it very much.

Keep up the good work!!
This was pretty cool it seemed like it could be full of secrets.

Now this right here is a fine example of telling a story without needing to tell a story. Having us walk around and discover things on our own is a darn great way of painting a very eerie picture.

On top of that, the look of the game, the subtle use of sounds and lighting and the lingering sense of dread just made this a top-notch spookalicious experience!

Keep up the amazing work, this one really blew me away! =)

Os Of Mac

Really cool game! Loved the environment and the intro was a really good setup!

Thanks so much! I like your theory about the alien, the experience is really designed for players to try to figure out what's really going on (which definitely has a definitive answer if you're willing to look and listen carefully).

Hello. Just wanted to let you know that there is no Linux binary and that it doesn't work under wine (for me at least) https://heretup383.weebly.com/braindead-mac-os.html.

Town

I didn't notice any Mac binaries either so I'd just suggest you uncheck the Linux and Mac options and let people know that the game is Windows exclusive.

Game looks cool though. Looks like a lot of effort was put into it. So thanks for working so hard on it.

Thanks for letting me know, I didn't realize that I had checked all those boxes.

I did a Let's Play of this as part of a new series I'm doing. Good job making a radical game. Best of luck with all future projects!

Really interesting little game, kinda wish the alien was a little more subtle like the rest of the game but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Thanks for the creative feedback, your point about the alien standing out is interesting and insightful. The game really is about tone and subtlety, so you're probably right! Also, thanks for the inspiring words, I am currently working on a VR project (for which a demo will be out soon) that I believe will be truly awesome.

Not a problem, glad I could give some useful feedback! I'd love to check it out if it weren't for the fact I don't have a VR Headset :(

A MINDBLOWING STORY(!) The Town Of Beacon Full Gameplay Walkthrough

I was worried going in when I saw there were no interaction keys for the player, but you really managed to build a compelling short story of a town and its residents and secrets with only environmental storytelling. The visuals were pretty good, but things do get a bit uncanny around this point in nearing photorealism. I absolutely loved the sound design though, really kept me on my toes until the end. Fantastic job! I look forward to more of your work.
